Ghostbusters the Game Review: Wii

Wed Jun 24, 2009, 8:48 AM
Hey, all!

As many of you know, seeing how you're right now surfing a Ghostbusters fan art gallery, Ghostbusters the Video Game just came out last week. It contains the talents of Dan Akyroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson, not to mention Annie Potts, Doyle Murray (?), and the guy who plays Walter Peck. Okay, so I can't remember who that is at the moment, but it's fine. This journal reviews the game, not the voice talent, which by the way does NOT suck. Most games I play have horrible voice talent so this one is a breath of fresh (although highly radioactive and funky green) air.

Unfortunately I have only been able to play the Wii version as it is the only system I have (computer won't play the PC game), but it's still a great game and I wanted to do a little review. Mostly on this game's many flaws.

GHOSTBUSTERS NINTENDO WII REVIEW:
It changes the story a bit, leaves out whole levels and cutscenes, forgets to tell you about new weapon upgrades, doesn't even contain several weapons like the Slime tether and Meson Collider, doesn't explain some things, refers back to things that only happen in the 360/PS3 versions, and has different level bosses, except for Staypuft and the Spiderwitch, which also includes the game having a different end boss. But otherwise it's great. It has great gameplay.

It's pretty much meant to be the kiddy version so expect it to be easy, brightly colored, and mostly non-threatening. Slimer isn't even allowed to attack anyone except Peter, including the player, which makes his bust shamefully and ridiculously easy as he never retaliates your attacks. Also, a whole lot of Peter's dialogue and his romancing Illysa Selwyn have been largely extracted from the game; they thought it was too adult for kids, perhaps? At least one expletive from Winston is heard within the game and the subtitles do not match, usually containing expletives that were censored out of the dialogue.

Except for the 2-Player co-op there isn't much in replay-ability. You'll collect all of the Art Pages (instead of Artifacts) and PKE Scans within a few short hours and you're only rewards are no overheat and invincibility (besides from the alternate Ghost Rookie costume). Split screen co-op is laggy and the PS2 is only single player. You'll beat this game several times faster than the PC, 360, and PS3 versions as it has a lot of the story and gameplay taken out of it. If your parents and sibling don't mind and can maturely handle the remaining uncensored weirdness involving a fictional view of the here-after and pseudo-scientific babble, get it on the Wii for your slightly younger brother or sister.

My biggest complaint? That I can't use ALL of the weapons in past levels. Man, I so wanted to slime Slimer and otherwise fry that spud. :-) My second biggest complaint: That I was denied most of the voice acting and dialogue from the original movie cast.

Do not the woods of Camp Blood.
Those are HIS woods...
He walks among the trails, hunting.
His machete drips blood and gleams in the moonlight.
Should you enter Camp Blood, beware,
for Jason Voorhees is always near...

I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.
Thanks for faving my interpretation of our favourite cartoon hottie. :)
